SysKid: An Interdisciplinary Search for Better Strategies to treat Chronic Kidney Disease
European Showcase Project under the Seventh Framework Programme of the EU
(München) To find better methods to prevent, diagnose and treat chronic kidney disease – that is the goal of the twenty-five research teams from fifteen countries who in January 2010 embarked on a major integrated EU research project known by its acronym SysKid. By forging close links between pure and applied research and employing the methods of systems biology and professional project management Syskid quickly became a European showcase project and was presented as a »success story« at an information day staged by the European Commission in Brussels for its Seventh Framework Programme. The SysKid researchers will also be presenting their project at the congress of the European Renal Association taking place in Munich from 25 to 28 June 2010.

Systems Biology in Nephrology: SysKid Researchers at the European Renal Congress Reveal a Picture of Complex and Dynamic Networks
25 Research groups from 15 countries study a severe complication of diabetes and hypertension
(Munich) At the Congress of the European Renal Association taking place in Munich from 25 to 28 June 2010 scientists from the large integrated EU research project SysKid will provide an overview of how research strategies known as »omics« for short can be used in nephrology. »Omics« can, for instance, help researchers analyse the genome or all the proteins contained in a cell. Together with clinical and epidemiological findings these data provide not only new insights into renal function but also pave the way for the development of new strategies to combat chronic kidney disease.

Mini-Symposia introducing SysKid
Renal Research: Achievements & Expectations
(Vienna, Innsbruck) On the occasion of SysKid's first general assembly which was held March 11-10,2010 at the Medical University of Vienna the project was introduced to the general public by mini-symposia "Renal Research: Achievements & Expectations" at the Medical University of Vienna on March 9 and at the Medical University of Innsbruck on March 12, 2010, respectively.
Representatives from all partners and nine advisory board members gathered SysKid's first general assembly; in total 75 participants engaged in bringing SysKid forward. The meeting in Vienna was concluded by an impressive patient report given by Niki Lauda, clearly bringing the patient needs to the forefront.

Europe tackles Chronic Kidney Disease with Systems Biology
25 Research groups from 15 countries will study a severe complication of diabetes and hypertension
(Vienna) SysKid, a large-scale integrating European research project, aims at understanding chronic kidney disease in the context of diabetes and hypertension. SysKid – which stands for »Systems Biology towards Novel Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosis and Treatment« – will pave the way for progress in prevention, new diagnostic strategies and treatment options for declining kidney function, which affects millions of patients suffering from diabetes and hypertension. The project is driven by a European Union grant of EUR 11,8 million from Framework Programme 7 (FP7) and a total project volume of close to EUR 16 million.
